I've had the blog up and running for over a week, and the comments have been (almost) uniformly polite and well-informed. I don't mind it at all if some readers disagree with what I'm saying.
But I do mind it when the comments impugn someone else's motives--which, unfortunately, is not that uncommon in the immigration debate--or use language that is entirely inappropriate. I've only had to delete a small number of messages in the blog so far. But I will continue to do so whenever it is necessary.
So please keep the comments at a professional level and don't say anything you would be embarrassed to say to someone face-to-face.

Lots of internet commenters suffer from cyber-disinhibition. It's amazing to read stuff which said elsewhere would get somebody decked.

I should add that I thought that impugning someone's motives is a time-honored rhetorical technique.
