Amnesty Vote #3458

Because of travel and teaching, I've been unable to blog much about the reappearance of the DREAM amnesty. As always, Mickey Kaus is on top of things.

My simple take on the matter: it is profoundly unwise to enact any policy that encourages illegal immigration as long as the border is so porous.

Take care of the border problem and I'll then be willing to talk about what to do with the 12+ million illegal immigrants now in the country.

NEWS UPDATE: HELL FREEZES OVER! BUSH ADMINISTRATION OPPOSES DREAM ACT!

The Administration is sympathetic to the position of young people who were brought here illegally as children and have come to know the United States as home. Any resolution of their status, however, must be careful not to provide incentives for recurrence of the illegal conduct that has brought the Nation to this point...The Administration therefore opposes the bill.

Who would have thunk it? They are actually saying that "it is profoundly unwise to enact any policy that encourages illegal immigration as long as the border is so porous."

It is profoundly unwise to enact any policy that encourages ANY illegal behavior -- regardless of any other factors. Everything we know about human behavior (not to mention our own painful experience with previous amnesty grants) teaches us that rewarding illegal behavior ALWAYS leads to more illegal behavior, not less. This is a pretty simple concept, so one would think that even a Congressman/woman or Senator could grasp it. Yet somehow, they don't.

It has to be trap. Get an axe.

what is wrong w/ you professor? have you not an iota of moral or ethical scruples in your entire person? the DREAM act is to help support the education of those children who were BROUGHT to this country AS MINORS. i'm sure my ancestors living in miami didn't want to give amnesty to the hordes of cubans fleeing the revolution in the 1950s, but by no means should the children of those people who were brought by their parents be held accountable for the choices of their parents. that's just irresponsible for someone in your position at an institution of higher education to espouse, sheer irresponsibility. ethically and philosophically, there's no argument in support of your reasoning.

Doug, you bought into the TV ad for the "Dream" act. For the real truth, total impact and inherent fraud in it, see here
