We Need A Fence Because...

It's good for the environment. Here's the latest word of wisdom from DHS Secretary Chertoff:

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff on Monday defended the construction of a fence along the southwest border, saying it's actually better for the environment than what happens when people illegally cross the U.S.-Mexico line.

"Illegal migrants really degrade the environment. I've seen pictures of human waste, garbage, discarded bottles and other human artifact in pristine areas," Chertoff said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press. "And believe me, that is the worst thing you can do to the environment."

This would be funny were it not for the indication that these people don't have a clue about what the real issue is. Next time I pick up the paper I expect to read that George Bush himself is arguing that we need to build a fence "for the children."

But to be fair to Chertoff (I can't believe I'm saying this) he was responding to Nancy Pelosi's equally disingenuous claim that a fence shouldn't be built because it would be bad for the environment. As if that were the real issue at stake!

Watch out people. This is the same guy who told us that there would be "unhappy consequences" for the economy if we tried to reduce illegal immigration. It is almost certain that what Chertoff (and his boss) have in mind when they say "illegal migrants really degrade the environment..." also includes "therefore we must give all of them a legal way to enter."

In Bushspeak, it'd be "for the childrens"
